Wood & Mine

Wood Be Mine is a handmade, home-based business specialized in a variety of custom engraved, sustainable, and hand crafted cutting boards, coasters, and personalized gifts for you and yours. Thank you for stopping by!
Hello! My name is Lea and I launched Wood Be Mine in 2015 from my in-home studio in the Willamette Valley near Portland, Oregon. I am a graphic designer, illustrator, woodworker, and a lover of natural and sustainable materials. I have established relationships with multiple woodworkers who use bamboo, (so versatile!) olive wood, (oh so beautiful!) and acacia (swoon!) in their furniture and construction work. The left over materials from these larger projects are sent to me where in my studio they are repurposed, sanded, polished, and made into beautiful gifts. With a background in illustration and graphic design, I love creating and engraving unique pieces. I have a commitment to unique, lasting and quality items while respecting a strong code of sustainability and eco friendly practices. Let me know how I can help you make the perfect gift!

══ Why my cutting boards are a cut above: ══

Before opening Wood Be Mine, I took a close look at the what other shops had to offer (and even ordered a good share of cutting boards!) so I could be sure to go above and beyond. My bamboo cutting boards are each-and-every-one hand crafted, with sustainable and/or reclaimed material, with attention to quality, beauty, and detail. They are substantial, solid pieces intended to be meaningful gifts and special heirlooms. Additionally, with professional experience in digital media and illustration, I'm confident that few out there can do your custom design as tastefully, skillfully (or as cheerfully!) as I can. Last but not least, everything I do is made with sustainable growth materials and a commitment to green practices. That's a cut above!

══ From Roots to Blocks: ══

The roots of what would become Wood Be Mine began 5 years ago, when I spontaneously left my home in Hawaii to spend several weeks alone in France. What was supposed to be three weeks rather suddenly became three years: I fell in love, went to graduate school, learned a love for crafting and handmade items, and married a handsome winemaker. Now, the two of us have settled in Oregon's wine country where we spend our days sipping, engraving, and feeling grateful. What I love most about Wood Be Mine is creating new and inspired designs that are completely unique to you and your style. Please feel free to reach out to me with custom design ideas or requests, - that's what Wood Be Mine is all about! I can't wait to help you find the perfect gift for you and yours .

Caring for Your Cutting Board

Mindful maintenance is key when you have a wooden butcher block, cutting board, or serving board. Improper storage, drastic changes in humidity, or an overnight soak in even the smallest of puddles can leave you with a board that’s warped, cracked, or otherwise damaged. Please be sure to store your products in cool, dry places, to wipe clean after every use, and treat your cutting board with mineral oil or butcher block conditioner as needed.

► Condition
Once a month or if your board begins looking a little dry or dull, treat it with food-safe mineral oil or butcher block conditioner. Drizzle the surface with mineral oil and rub it in with a soft, dry cloth. The oil moisturizes the wood, helps to avoid splitting, and gives the bamboo that lovely burnished look. I recommend "Howard Butcher Block Conditioner", which is a food grade blend of mineral oil and natural waxes.

► Wash
Wipe your cutting board clean after each use. When needed, gently wash the surface with warm, soapy water. Be sure to dry the cutting board after each wash or prop them up in a cool, dry place to avoid warpage or trapped moisture.

► Disinfect
If you use your bamboo boards for meats, it's important to disinfect them after each use. Dissolve one part vinegar in five parts water, and use a sponge to scrub down the board. Rinse and dry as usual. Keep in mind that it's just good practice to reserve one board entirely for meats. You'd hate to cross-contaminate your vegetables (especially if you eat them raw).

► Remove Stains and Odors
From time to time, you may notice vegetable stains setting into the board, which is not a health hazard but can ruin the beauty of the bamboo. To get rid of stains, scrub some coarse salt over the surface of the board with a sponge, then rinse and dry. Odors can also ingrain themselves in the bamboo, which you can resolve by rubbing a paste of baking soda and water over the board before rinsing and drying.
